RIM keeps getting beat and yet still manages to stay on its feet. Wednesday, the Canadian BlackBerry maker faced another hurdle in its attempt to turn the company’s fortunes around. A Swedish arbitrator determined RIM violated Nokia’s patents that pertain to WiFi/WLAN connectivity.
“RIM is liable to pay royalties and damages to Nokia for its … sales of any subscriber terminals (handsets or tablets) … compatible with the WLAN standard,” said the arbitrator. RIM in turn stated it would respond to Nokia “in due course.” In a sign that likely means RIM will countersue, the BlackBerry maker said in that it too has a “industry-leading portfolio of its own.” At any rate, both RIM and Nokia are staging large calculated comebacks in 2013.
For RIM, it is the release of BlackBerry 10 and a new line-up of BlackBerry hardware, for Nokia, it is relying heavily on Windows 8 to catch on and with handsets built by the Finnish company. No word on what the settlement would be, nor if this would potentially delay the release of BB10, which has been delayed on numerous occasions.
